Abstract Trailer on Twin Peaks: The Return

Elizabeth Alsop, working with Showtime’s Twin Peaks: The Return (U.S.A., 2017), borrowed the extraordinary mysterious force of its object’s images and sounds to suggest that this series may be representative of a turn in recent television away from plot and towards something more—to employ Jason Mittell’s term—‘batshit’.

14. Epigraph Exercise: Trouble in Paradise This video was submitted as an exercise in Middlebury College's Workshop in Videographic Criticism, sponsored by the NEH. The challenge was to combine a film clip, a quotation, and at least one track of sound from another source. The film is Ernst Lubitsch's Trouble in Paradise (1932), the quotation is from V.F. Perkins's essay "Where Is the World? The Horizon of Events in Movie Fiction," and the music is "Vector Melody," by Podington Bear, on an attribution-non commercial license at http://freemusicarchive.org/music/Podington_Bear/Rhythm_and_Strings/VectorMelody. The music track has been shortened. Thanks to the participants of the workshop, and to the organizers Jason Mittell and Christian Keathley.

18. Notorious alternative trailer An alternative trailer for Notorious, made as part of the NEH funded workshop 'Scholarship in Sound & Image' at Middlebury College, June 2015. Inspired by a particular shot which hints at a dimension of the film which could be elaborated if the narrative were oriented slightly differently, this essay seeks to amplify the idea that the spy story of Notorious is a means to articulate ideas around gender, jealousy and sexual insecurity.
