The Videographic Essay: Practice and Pedagogy

Adaptation Epigraph

Jason Mittell's epigraph, quoted from Michel Foucault’s seminal essay ‘What Is an Author?’, in conjunction with the film Adaptation (Spike Jonze, U.S.A., 2002), explored how the film’s representation of writer’s block can be reread as a manifestation of the very dissolution of the author as a figure. In this version, the character of Charlie Kaufman fails to write, while his typewriter produces Foucault’s words that both mock his lack of authorial identity and seem to validate his failure as the byproduct of changing notions of authorship itself.
