The Videographic Essay: Practice and Pedagogy

Videographic Exercises

This site serves as a companion to the original book, The Videographic Essay: Criticism in Sound & Image by Christian Keathley and Jason Mittell (caboose books, 2016) and its revised edition (caboose books, 2019). It collects a number of exercises produced in June 2015, June 2017, and June 2018 as part of a series of workshops on videographic criticism entitled ‘Scholarship in Sound and Image,’ which we hosted at Middlebury College, Vermont. Funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities Office of Digital Humanities, any views, findings, conclusions or recommendations expressed on this site do not necessarily reflect those of the National Endowment for the Humanities.

These videos are examples of exercises produced as part of the original 2015 workshop by the fourteen participants: Vicki Callahan, Tracy Cox-Stanton, Corey Creekmur, Allison de Fren, Shane Denson, John Gibbs, Liz Greene, Adam Hart, Patrick Keating, Melanie Kohnen, Jaap Kooijman, Nic Poppe, Michael Talbott and Kristen Warner. For the revised edition of the book, we incorporated examples from participants from 2017 and 2018: Elizabeth Alsop, Katie Bird, Nat Deyo, Susan Harewood, Evelyn Kreutzer, Derek Long, Kathleen Loock, Casey McCormick, Nicole Morse, Hong Nguyen, Sean O'Sullivan, Maria Prammagiore, and Jordan Schonig. Many thanks to all the participants for allowing their works to be shared, as well as our collaborators in running the workshop: Catherine Grant, Ethan Murphy, Stella Holt, August Laska, Emma Hampsten, Eric Faden, and Kevin B. Lee. Learn more about all of them in the Credits.
